File Management Tutorial

Spend less time looking for your homework files by setting up a system early on in the semester! In this tutorial you will set up a folder for your role as a Heritage University student. Which will contain an individual folder for each of your classes. Once the folders are set up all you must do is use the organization system consistently. It is easier than it sounds!
Plenty of your schoolwork will be available in electronic form and this tutorial will focus on organizing your electronic homework files. However, if you work best with paper and pencil, we encourage you to visit the Academic Skills Center (ASC) to set up the binder organization system with the Academic Intervention Specialist.

  • To make digital files easy to find, follow and stick to a format when saving files. If your professor does not have a format preference, then use ClassName_AssignmentName_YourName.
  • When you download assignments and save them, make it a habit to store them in the correct folder.
  • When you finish an assignment before the upload is open, consider storing them in a separate folder. Create a folder labeled "Completed & Ready to Upload" and save your completed assignment in this folder to help you remember to upload later. Once you have successfully uploaded the homework file, move the document to its class folder.
