Work Study

Welcome and thank you for your interest in participating in the Heritage University Work Study Program.The program will allow students to pursue placement of their choice and serve as a tool for students to attain skills in the area of job readiness.

How DOES THE Work Study Placement Work?

  • Students must be awarded Work study. A Financial Aid Representative will award all work-study eligible students and determine the award amount.
  • Visit the job board after you have selected the desired job you wish to pursue. You will need to:
    • Submit your online work-study application here. If an agreement between student and supervisor is made (willingness to hire), the supervisor will inform the Work Study Coordinator.
    • If you are selected for a work-study position you will be contacted by Financial Aid to set up an appointment within 1-3 days to generate a contract. You will be required to attend a new hire orientation by Human Resources to provide necessary payroll documents (please visit http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-9.pdf for a complete listing of required documents, which must be presented at the meeting; one item from column A or one item from column B and one item from column C.)

Important FACTS about Work Study Placement:

  • Workstudy awards range from $2,000 - $9,000 for an academic year.
  • Students are allowed to work up to 19 hours per week but under no circumstance may a student work more than 19 hours per week.
  • Individualized placements will determine the hour allotment per week as well as the hourly wage.
  • Placement is determined by supervisor
  • Placement is limited, not all Workstudy Awarded students are guaranteed a placement.
  • Students who are hired through the workstudy program must maintain academic satisfactory progress
  • Students placed through the program are recommended to attend resume writing workshops, career fairs and participate in mock interviews

Workstudy Requirements: 

1. Financial need on your financial aid package

2. Eligible for State and/or Federal funding

3. GPA 2.0 or higher

4. Attending 1/2 time (6 credits) or greater

Work with the Registrar's office staff, students and visitors * Perform a variety of duties not limited to: making copies, retrieving information, mail, and data entry, filing and answering phones, use of Jotform and Jenzabar One software to organize and file electronic documents, assisting with commencement preparations.* Carry out instructions and provide directions to others that may include pulling files when requested, changing file labels, perform with high degree of accuracy and timeliness. * Use of computer * Expectation of maintaining strict confidentiality at all times. * Mail: pick up, deliver and sort mail. * Commitment to correct errors, participates in solutions, and receives feedback * Other duties as assigned.

Job Summary:

Toppenish High School is seeking responsible, reliable, and motivated Work-Study Students to assist with various athletic event duties, including game setup, tear down, ticket sales, clock operation, and supervision. This position provides students with valuable experience in event coordination, customer service, and sports management, while also supporting our athletic programs.  To be eligible for this position, students must work with their college/university Financial Aid Office and meet federal and school qualification and criteria.  This is NOT funded by the Toppenish School District. This position is Off Campus and requires the student to commute. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Game Setup:
    • Assist with setting up sports equipment and supplies before games, including goals, nets, benches, and other field/court equipment.
    • Ensure all necessary items (such as score sheets, water bottles, etc.) are ready for teams, referees, and coaches.
    • Help set up and organize the venue (gym or field) for spectators, including arranging seating, signage, and any other required items.
  • Game Tear Down:
    • Assist with the breakdown of equipment after events, ensuring all items are properly stored or returned to their designated areas.
    • Help clean and organize the game venue including putting away supplies.
  • Ticket Sales:
    • Sell tickets to spectators at athletic events, maintaining accurate records of tickets sold.
    • Provide friendly customer service to attendees, answering questions and ensuring smooth entry into the event.
    • Handle cash and ticketing systems responsibly, making sure all transactions are accurately processed.
  • Clock Operator:
    • Operate the game clock and scoreboard for various sports events (basketball, volleyball, etc.) as directed by the game officials.
    • Ensure accurate tracking of time, fouls, and scores during the event.
    • Communicate with referees and coaches as necessary to keep the game running smoothly.
  • Supervisor Support:
    • Assist the Game Supervisor in overseeing the general operations of the event, ensuring that everything runs on time and in accordance with safety protocols.
    • Monitor behavior and help ensure that spectators and participants are adhering to school policies.
    • Be available to help resolve any issues or questions that may arise during the event.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a student eligible for the work-study program.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
  • Dependability and a strong sense of responsibility.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, public environment.
  • A positive attitude and willingness to learn.
  • Previous experience in event setup, sports, or customer service is a plus but not required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry sports equipment (up to 25 lbs).
  • Ability to stand, walk, and assist with setup or tear down for extended periods.
  • Ability to work in both outdoor and indoor settings with appropriate attire based on weather conditions.

Work Schedule:

  • Flexible hours based on event schedules, including evenings and weekends.
  • Expected to work 2-8 hours per event, depending on the game schedule.
  • Maximum hours per week = 19, per university guidelines.
