Celebrating the Personal Narrative Original post: Tue 4/16/2024 at 11:32 AM
Good morning,

We had a great discussion in the Friday Comp Meeting celebrating the "moments of yay!"  that students are having with this final 101 unit.   Crystal, I loved your comment that you shared some of your work.   Similarly, I participate in the timed freestyle writing activity (45-60 min.) in class and then share my results.  I am passing on the links to personal narrative resources that I added this semester.  Feel free to use them if they can benefit your students.
  1. In-Class: Tuesday Writing Prompt, 45-60 Minutes of Freely Writing:  Sight, Sound, Touch, Taste, Smell - Describe and explore home or belonging.  This may be a person or place, an experience or an event.  What themes did your writing uncover as you explored this topic?  Is there a story or perspective in this free write that you want to follow up on?  What was the most surprising direction your words took?

  2. Optional At Home: If you enjoy sketching, drawing, or creating images, this activity could be a fun brainstorm as you explore ideas for your Personal Narrative Essay.  Also, if you love the image(s) you come up with, they could be included in your PN Presentation in Week 15.  Storytelling: Draw Your Story . . .

  3. For Inspiration:  This link includes a collection of short stories that explore belonging told by their authors.  Listen and find inspiration about how to begin your story, how to use characters, description, and a central purpose that invites your reader into the personal narrative you are creating.: Stories About Belonging
