Description
This course will focus on the effects of substances, diagnosing, and evaluating substance use disorders, and some of the most common behavioral and medical treatments for SUDs. Students will focus on how different classes of substances impact the biopsychosocial health of individuals in the long-term, including the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences on the development and treatment of SUDs. Students will be exposed to the process of diagnosing and evaluating SUDs using the DSM-5 and the ASAM criteria. Students will be introduced to Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy as well as the most common medication interventions. Prerequisite(s): Admission to the MSW program
