Levy Says Signings Aren't Great? I Was Firing a Rose

Tuesday 23rd of May 2023

If you've ever watched Shawn Levy's films, then you know he doesn't shy away from his influences. That sentiment is especially evident in his latest Netflix project The Adam Project.

Science-fiction story featuring a pilot from 2050 who travels back in time to meet his 12-year-old self. But it also explores the difficulties that come with growing up.

Levy is not impressed with the signings

Uriah Phillips Levy was an extraordinary individual. He was determined, eccentric, firmly convinced of the rightness of his causes, an astute businessman and admirer of Thomas Jefferson.

In his first year as Spurs chairman, he stressed the need to make significant changes and take risks; two years later he advised us to be patient as the team had plenty of money but no major acquisitions.

He has been successful at Tottenham in this regard; the club has won silverware since 2008 and is regularly included in the Champions League despite not having access to the same level of state funding that Manchester City and Newcastle are using to achieve top honours.

Through it all, it has been evident that Pochettino and Levy would always engage in a power struggle; although his team achieved great success under him, Pochettino seemed to always throw Levy something new. Although this struggle may not be over yet, both parties will need to work hard if they want to claim this success as their own.

He is not impressed with the players

Levy has achieved great success, yet has been unable to assemble a team capable of competing in the top half of the table. His lack of faith in their current group has been one major source of frustration.

He has failed to nurture young talent at Tottenham, which is unfortunate as there is plenty of potential in their youth set-up. It appears that he is dissatisfied with his current team and intends to add additional reinforcements during the summer.

However, Levy must exercise caution as he has no cash in January to spend. That means any mid-season acquisitions must be offset by sales - which could present Levy with an impossible decision to make.

He is not impressed with the coaching staff

It's hard to imagine Levy sitting back and allowing Mourinho to take over Tottenham when he could have been bringing in more top-tier talent. In the past, he has tried to lure in unlikely high-profile signings in an effort to make Tottenham more desirable, but this strategy has proven ineffective.

In July, Levy appointed Gianni Vio as set pieces coach at Spurs with the aim of increasing their threat from dead-ball situations. However, while Vio has made some inroads this season with some success, he hasn't made much difference when it comes to goalscoring chances; it would've been nicer for him to be involved more in pregame preparation and helping players understand where to be when receiving a set piece.

As Levy attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, coaches Dick Clausen and Harris Lamb had a major impact on him; they showed him that coaching could be an enjoyable profession. These men played an influential role in his decision to pursue coaching football; to this day he credits them as two of his biggest influences when discussing how he got into the sport.

He is not impressed with the fans

It's no secret that Tottenham lack the financial and sporting capacity to attract top talent. Levy has made efforts to change that, but it will be an uphill battle in a league without an established top four like Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea or Liverpool.

Supporters could easily point the finger at Levy when things don't go according to plan, but the reality is that he has managed to turn Tottenham into regular Champions League teams without having to splash out in the transfer market.

Although Levy's approach is admirable, many Tottenham fans are not completely content with how things are progressing. There have been growing frustrations in recent years and some believe the club are placing "profit before glory" at times. Despite this, Spurs supporters continue to show their admiration for Levy - a testament to how much they value his leadership.
