A draw against mid-table Stoke City has narrowed the gap on Boro to three points, but United have a game in hand and an improved goal difference. They can make significant inroads into that deficit when they host the Black Cats at Bramall Lane this weekend.
Sunderland have made a promising start to the new campaign, yet remain five points behind leaders Middlesbrough and Norwich City. They face an FA Cup fourth-round clash at Fulham on Saturday before traveling to Millwall in the league later in the month.
