One of the biggest sports stars of the year was Ashley Stokes, while Eve Muirhead and Beth Mead were also in the running. But which was the best sports star of 2022?

England captain Ben Stokes led the team to a 3-0 Test series win over Pakistan and nine straight wins in the red ball cricket tournament. He also captained the men's T20 side that won the World Cup. The former Surrey and Middlesbrough player took part in his first Test in 17 years and set a record run rate, putting England on the path to a historic victory.

Stokes' teammates all started their careers in Sunderland. They included Vivianne Miedema, who has since moved to Arsenal. Her coach, Sarina Wiegman, is the women's coach of the year.

Gadirova, an 18-year-old gymnast, won three medals at the world championships, including the floor exercise gold. She was also named player of the tournament. This made her the fifth British individual world champion. Earlier in the year, she won bronze in the all-around.

In addition to the two sports stars, there were three nominees for the BBC SPOTY. Ronnie O'Sullivan, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Eve Muirhead were also in the running. Sports journalist Nancy Gillen, who is a former Paralympian, was on the panel.

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year will be awarded to a sports star who has exhibited outstanding achievement in the last year. The award will be presented by Gary Lineker, Gabby Logan, and Clare Balding. It will be broadcast live on the BBC on Wednesday, December 21. You can watch the event on BBC iPlayer.

Messi has been the recipient of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award before. His golden boot for best player at the 2022 World Cup was awarded to him, and he won the Golden Ball as well. However, he won't be eligible for the award for another four years, when he turns 39. After winning the tournament, Messi said that he wanted to play a few more matches. If Argentina wins the tournament, Messi will go down as the greatest athlete of all time.

Another nomination was the BBC Sports Personality of the Year's Unsung Hero, which went to Mike Alden. He was diagnosed with brittle bone disease at the age of four. Since then, he has played for Chelsea, Brighton, and Manchester United. A former Charlton cadet, he is a strong ball holder and a great ball holder in the air.

As well as the top awards, the Helen Rollason Award was given to Rob Burrow. Burrow was diagnosed with motor neuron disease in 2019. Despite his illness, Burrow won the GB Olympic team gold medal in Beijing. Other nominees included snooker superstar Ronnie O'Sullivan, Jessica Gadirova, and Eve Muirhead.

The next BBC Sports Personality of the Year will be held in Media City UK on December 7. Nominations will be announced on the night. The show will be broadcast on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
